The road to The Life-Light

Visiting Down Under – Sydney

After our awesome time in Hawaii we literally skipped a day while flying to Sydney, Australia. We left on April 26th to arrive in Sydney on April 28th. Due to the timezones we travelled from -12 to +12 hours and hopped 24 hours to “the future” yes thats right. We discovered the secret of time-travel.. only it’s very expensive, time consuming and quite uncomfortable to be honest…

Enough joking around! We were welcomed by my (Jordi’s) second cousin Karen on the airport and we were able to stay with her and the whole family in a town called Blaxland located in the Blue Mountains Area one hour from Sydney central! I never met my family members here in Sydney but they welcomed us like we know each other for years and to be honest.. now it really feels like that!
We stayed with Karen, her husband Barry and their daughters Eloise and Isabelle for 2 weeks and we really build a very good relationship in those days!

The day we arrived they took us to a national park no too far from where they live to go out for a pic nic. It was very clear that the wild life in the Blue Mountains is something totally different from  the “wild life” in the Netherlands. Wild kangaroos hopping by and huge birds everywhere. It almost sounds like a jungle with the cockatoos making their loud noises.

The second day Karen and Isabelle showed us around the Blue Mountains area where we could see the beautiful scenery, views, waterfalls and the Three Sisters of course! The next day we went with Karen to Featherdale Wildlife park to see more Kangaroos and our now new favorite, cutest animal off all time: The koala. Surprisingly enough all animals where extremely lively, where Koala’s normally are very slow and sleepy. But obviously the koala’s where super excited to see us and we could pet them while they ate some fresh leaves.

The first week was all about spending time with the family and experience the country, Karen took us to a beach house south of Sydney for 2 days in a small town called Killcare. A small little house in a beautiful place, a perfect place to get some rest and in the same time do some work.

Before you know it, the first week of our stay was already over. Where the first week was all about the country, the second week was about the city Sydney! Saturday we had an appointment with director Salomon Ligthelm in the city, but we’ll talk more about our appointments in another post. After that Karen took us to Manly, we took the ferry which went around the Opera House to Manly where we had some fish and chips while being attacked by the hungry seagulls at the beach! haha! When we went back to the city we had a drink at the Opera House bar enjoying the sunset and the beautiful view at the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. This area called Circular Quay was definitely one of our favorite area’s in Sydney.

Two days later we went to North Sydney to meet up with Glenn Stewart, another Sydney based short film director and designer. After that we took the train to Bondi Junction to see Bondi Beach, also known from the TV show ‘Bondi Beach’. And later on in the week we decided to take a tour bus around the city. This way we didn’t have to walk too much and still had the chance to see everything. Although we did saw everything, as photographers it’s not the best way to explore a city I guess. So we decided to hop of the bus under The Harbour Bridge and walk along the harbour to get something to eat in Circular Quay.

The last weekend we met up with short film / documentary director Paul Nevison (and his two little girls) in Castle Towers, the last film director from our big list! On Sunday, our last day in Sydney, we made a big BBQ lunch for the whole family as a big thank you for their hospitality and the awesome time they gave us in Sydney.

Sydney has so many aspects of all different city’s we visited and it almost seems like a combination between aspects of New York, San Francisco and L.A. but remixed by the Aussies! And although we both loved the city, our visit to Sydney was incredibly awesome because of the people we met and had chance to spend time with. Above all my (Jordi’s) family, but also the directors we were able to meet up with. We’ll talk more about the inspiring talks we had with Salomon, Glenn and Paul in a next blog post!

Cheers! Jordi & Daan
